Ritual vs. Autonomous
I believe that autonomous theatre is originally derived from ritual theatre. It is an evolved version, but is not necessarily a better version. I believe that though theatre started as a type of performance related to the outcomes of certain ritualistic events, it has developed so that it can now stand on it's own and be performed anywhere for any reason or no reason. Though I believe that autonomous theatre has sprung from ritual theatre, I do not believe that one is better than the other or should be regarded as more socially acceptable. In my personal opinion, one should not have to distinguish the difference between theatre as a form of art or entertainment and the presence of theatrical elements in every day activities. Both of these should be regarded as theatre.
I agree with Richard Schechner when he proclaimed, "Performance is a very inclusive notion of action; theatre is only one node on a continuum that reaches from the ritualizations of animal behavior (including humans) through the performances in everyday life..."
